The wing top bust dress has been one of my most coveted inspirations since I discovered vintage. This little unusual bust is fitted with an accentuated “wing” or “petal” usually in a complementary fabric to make it stand out. It is often seen in several Alfred Shaheen designs as well as a few other vintage designers. The challenge for this pieces is there are no true vintage patterns for this type of bust. Likely the pattern makers of this time saw this bust as a fad or fancy or possibly too complicated for the average sewer.
Most of the vintage patterns of the day with something reminiscent of the wing bust, have more of a pointed bust rather than the wing directly in the pattern. So about a year and a half ago I decided to do some of my own pattern drafting and alteration. And with a little finesse, voila! The wing bust top!
It also features a back separating zipper, plastic boning, and two shirred panels in the back for added stretch! The wings can even be flipped up for a whole other look. You can purchase the wing bust top here!
