A few weeks ago, a client wrote me and asked if I could make something from something special from several yards of vintage fabric. She gave me her measurements, and we set forth looking for the right tiki pattern that would fit with no possibility of having more fabric. The first pattern we settled on was a waterfall late 60’s dress.
However, the challenge, like most vintage patterns is that, usually if yu find a vintage pattern, you only can find it in one size. So the process of grading began. This involves a bit of math to figure out how many sizes up or down a pattern needs to go. For this task, because the bodice is similar to most standard bodices, I was able to use my toolfully grading template for the first time.
The fabric is amazing and gorgeous. Maybe one day I can transfer it to a spoonflower fabric and be able to use it again in another way. There was a lot of nuances to this garment but I enjoyed sewing it together and figuring out the best way to get the most of the limited yardage I had.
I did pin this dress to show what it would look like on the mannequin as it is actually a bit bigger. I am super pleased with how it turned out and I hope she loves it!
Do you have 5 yards of fabric that would be perfect for a dress like this? You can get one made for you here.
Don’t have 5 yards of fabric? That’s ok we can make something amazing together from another fabric here.
